We did a "Year In Review" activity with our class blog!  We looked at our very first Sign-In Sheet, self-portraits that we drew, and our first printing activities!  We saw old pictures of the classroom, sang songs from the whole year, and got to see how far we've come in just 40 weeks.

Scientists in the Schools: Marvelous Machines

Scientists in the Schools came into the class to talk about Simple Machines!  We used wheels, gears, levers, zippers, buttons... things we never thought were really machines!  It was an amazing afternoon and thanks to the parents and students who came to help us out!

To compare how much better our drawing has become, we created "This Is Me Now" pictures, trying to draw as realistic a picture of ourself as possible.  We then compared it to our "This Is Me" picture from the start of the year.

We went to see Jackman's amazing talent show, Jackman's Got Talent!  We saw singers, piano players, dancers, and Mr. McCullough and Mme Rankin were called up on stage to do a Bollywood dance! 



Week 39: We're Proud Of Our Year!

Commemorative Reading Buddy Plates

Instead of doing something like "Thank You Cards", we decided we'd make something super personalized for our Reading Buddies to remember us by!  So, we're creating Commemorative Reading Buddy Plates.  We took black & white photographs, coloured them in with crayons and pencil crayons (they did NOT need to be realistic), cut them out, glued them to paper plates and added stickers, shapes and colours!  Our Reading Buddies are going to get a nice gift!

June Portfolio

This is our LAST chance to add something to our Writing Portfolio!  It will be really neat seeing how different our drawing and writing is since September.

Report Card, Page 2

Everybody will be getting a report card next week!  The second page asks us what we're most proud of from this year.  We drew pictures and tried to write something that we did, learned, made or tried this year in kindergarten that made us feel proud.

Other Things We Did

We talked about what it means to be PROUD of something and came up with this definition; Being proud means you are happy or feel good about something you made, did, learned or tried.  We talked about some of the things we were proud of from the year and what we should feel proud of (Learning how to read) and what it means to feel happy about something (You don't feel proud when you eat a chocolate cake.)

Our sunflower received its final measurement this week!  It grew 7 CUBES last week for a grand total of 33 CUBES!!!  Most of us think it will bloom by next Thursday - we'll have to see!

In preparation for our visit from Scientists in the School next week, we started making some Marvelous Machines of our own!  On Wednesday, we created machines with working parts like wheels, hinges and gears.  On Thursday, we worked with simple catapults!  We made them using two parts, a flat arm and a block of our choosing as a fulcrum.  We figured out that, to get the best launch, we need a flat arm that is long enough to get good leverage and a strong fulcrum that isn't too tall, maybe with a bit of a point or a rounded edge.  Let's see if what we learned helps us with our Scientists next week!

Week 38: Summer Trees & Books In The Park

Inuksuk Balancing
Using a collection of found rocks, we tried creating Inuksuks, remembering balance rules we talked about during an experiment in the carpet.  It was tough to get them tall but those who stuck with it were able to build Inuksuks with four or five levels!

Summer Trees

Finishing off our Seasonal Trees, we started work on our summer trees.  We kept the trunks brown, but used three different types of green to create big, leafy tops and lots of grass around our trees.

Upper-Case & Lower-Case Match

At our Printing Centre, we worked on attempting lower case letters, practicing them alongside the upper-case letters.  We then matched upper and lower-case letters, trying to figure out which ones were the same, even if they didn't look it.

Other Things We Did

On Friday, we went to Withrow Park with our Reading Buddies for our Books In The Park day!  We took along some of our favourite books, had our parent volunteers and teachers act out 5 Little Ducks, got to hear our Reading Buddies perform "Bananaphone", and we also got to play in the Withrow playground!  It was a beautiful day and thank you to all the adults who came to help us out!

We talked about balance while making our Inuksuk and tested whether it was easier to balance flat rocks or heavy rocks (flat won!) and whether we should put heavier rocks on top or lighter rocks on the top (lighter worked better) to create a tall, tall structure.

We kept talking about some of the differences we saw in summer compared to spring.

After learning "5 Little Ducks", we asked an important questions - what did those five little ducks do all alone on the other side of the hill?  We drew pictur 5 ducks in them, and then tried to write some of their ideas as well!

During Show & Share, we saw a Lego Power Ranger, a starfish and shell, a walking, dalking, dancing robot, and some street chalk!

We continued counting up the cubes for our class sunflower and counting down the days to the end of school!

Week 37: Self-Portraits and Junk Creations

Due to the short week, we're doing more whole-class activities as opposed to individual centres.  The activities we've done this week are;

Todd Parr Portraits
On Monday, we created self-portraits using the Todd Parr rules.  They are;

1) Dots for eyes

2) Lines for smiles and eyebrows.

3) No noses

4) Simple hair

5) Silly looking!

Using a picture of ourselves, we created our Parr-style portrait with crayons on beige construction paper.  Then, on Tuesday, we painted our portraits using food colouring!  The results were quite colourful!

Garden Planting

The Gardening Committee paid a visit to the Kindergarten playground.  We talked some more about what plants need to grow and helped them plant Snapdragons and Lamb's Ear in the garden!  Everybody planted with a partner on a beautiful, sunny day!

We also got to dig through a giant bucket of dirt with helpful insects like pill bugs and worms! 

Junk Creations

After using our recycled material to build, sort, learn about being "green" and to create several class projects, Mr. McCullough gave us a chance to get rid of it all by making ANYTHING we wanted!  There were boats, race cars, monsters, towers, presents, necklaces, mittens - we got SUPER creative!  Thanks to our parent volunteers and to our Reading Buddies for helping out!

We talked about the difference between upper-case letters and lower case letters, practed matching them up, and added them to our printing centre!

Our "leftover" butterfly parts from our foam butterfly activity last week have been a big hit!  We've been using them to create things like flowers, fireworks and even The Riddler from Batman!

Show and Share was a hit once again, with the theme seeming to be dolls and lego this week.

Monthly Portfolio Writing

We added another page to our monthly portfolio.  A lot of us are writing small words and sentences, and we know that we can look at our sight word wall to help us with spelling!

Foam Butterflies

Some easy to use foam butterfly kits from Dollarama have helped us learn more about symmetry, as we have to make sure that one side of our butterfly looks the same as the other side of the butterfly.  It's also helping us with our fine motor skills.

Magnet Math

Using both our bear counters and subtraction circles, we've been representing our math facts using magnets on our new portable magnet board!

Water Lego

We've been using Lego to build things all year.  We've never tried to build with Lego in the water table!!!  We're noticing some of the differences, like the pieces being more slippery, the challenge of trying to find a place to put things as we're building, and how we can make our structures float.

Todd Parr Drawings

We're working on creating faces and drawing of people by using the drawings of Todd Parr as an example.  Every day, we'll be reading one of his books, and then trying to copy the pictures from the book so we can make our own Todd Parr style portraits next week!

Other Things We Did

Our butterflies are coming out of their cocoons!  At the start of the class on Monday, we had 4 butterflies.  By the end of the class, we had 8!  By Thursday afternoon, we had over twenty!  On Thursday afternoon, we released the butterflies into nature.  We had a class vote on where we should let them go and we decided the Butterfly Garden was the best since it had lots of shade, flowers for the butterflies to get nectar from, branches for them to hang off of and trees to protect them from predators!

We looked at the drawings of Todd Parr and looked at how to draw people like he does.  We discovered that he doesn't use noses, puts hair in small lines or big shapes, uses black dots for eyes, and uses simple shapes for body parts.  Mr. McCullough also had us look at Todd Parr pictures he drew.  We had to guess who he had drawn and then prove our answer by using different parts of the picture as part of our reason!

Show and Share was back, with one student reading us a Piggy & Gerald book!  We also got to see a manatee, a Transformer jet and an owl backpack with a baby in it!!!

We kept looking at the idea of symmetry and talked about how making something perfectly symmetrical is hard, whether it's folding it over with paint or trying to do it by hand.

Our new books for our Book Club arrived in class!  We've really enjoyed using the words and sounds we know, picture clues and patterns in the words to help us learn how to read!

Week 35: Cocoons are Hanging! REAL ONES!!!

With our new sight words on our word wall, we practised writing sight words freehand!

Subtracting from 5

Using math circles with the "5", "-" and "=" already included, we started subtracting numbers from 5 using our bear counters and, for those who were ready, markers to draw pictures or write numbers!

Monarch Butterfly Folds

Using black, orange and white paint, we created half of a butterfly on a blue piece of paper.  We then folded the page to create a symmetrical Monarch butterfly!

Living vs Non-Living Sorting

We set up two hula-hoops on the carpet.  In one hula hoop, we placed things that were alive (small plants) or things that represented things that were alive (like a toy pig or toy person).  In the other hoop, we put things that weren't alive.  Some class debates involved whether cartoon characters like Dopey from Snow White was alive (we decided he wasn't, because he was only a cartoon) or if dinosaurs would go in the alive pile (they could, because they were alive a long time ago).

Other Things We Did

Our butterfly house finally came!  All of our butterfly cocoons are hanging comfortably from the roof or from some tree branches, and some are definitely ready to turn into butterflies!  We also talked about things we should and shouldn't include in our butterfly house to make it a good home.

We used a non-fiction book about pill bugs to show that you could make up fiction stories from real pictures using only your imagination!

The idea of subtracting was worked on this week.  We used some hula hoops, a "ghost" five that would disappear when our "counters" (kids) would stand on it and reappear when the kids moved to other circles.  Using this technique and a little bit of singing and chanting, we worked through all the benchmarks for subtracting from 5.

We watched a video about the Monarch migration from Mexico.  It was amazing to see trees that looked like they were completely made from butterflies.

We talked a bit about the idea of symmetry and that it means both sides are exactly the same, only reversed along one line in the middle.

Week 34: How Things Live

Sight Word Tornado

We all played our favourite sight word game, as everbody did his or her best to work with our tops to find all the sight words they could.

5 groups of 10?  Or 10 groups of 5?

Using sorting circles and coloured bean, we made 50 by making either 5 groups of 10 or 10 groups of 5!

Painted Flower Pots

Decorating first with water soluable markers, and then with watercolours, we decorated the pots of our bean plants before taking them home!

Monarch Cocoons

Using green, grey, gold, green, black and white paint, we decorated the cocoons we made last week.  It was unbelievable how hard they got!

Rooted Flower Diagrams

We once again worked on drawing flowers, but this time we added a root system by using straws to represent how flowers "drink" water!

Other Things We Did

Three new sight words this week:  HIS, THEY and WITH.

We talked about how flowers ate and drank, and we discovered that the roots of the flower help it get water and nutrients through the soil!

Mr. McCullough asked us if our class caterpillar would turn into a butterfly before it's string got too heavy.  Trick question, though!  Our class caterpillar will not turn into a butterfly because it's made of paper, doesn't move, can't spin it's own cocoon and, therefore, is not alive.  We then talked about what makes something alive before introducing our REAL class caterpillars, which should be turning into butterflies in a couple of weeks!

We kept working with the idea of "How Many More" by hanging our Monarch Cocoons everyday and asking "How many more are there today?"

We talked about problem solving in class, doing some role play and discussion about how we can solve problems before they start by talking to the other person (instead of just finding the teacher).

Week 33: Canvas and Cops

As we keep moving towards the 50th Anniversary of Jackman, we reversed what we knew about the number 50.  This time, instead of making five groups with ten things in each, we made ten groups with five things in each!

Life Cycles
Mr. McCullough gave us words to follow so we could write out the different parts of either the life cycle of a butterfly, the life cycle of a frog, or both!  We then drew the different stages of those life cycles.

50th Anniversary Canvas
We had lots of parent volunteers this week, which helped us a lot when we were painting our 50-themed canvas!

Block & Bucket Centres
To make sure that the canvas wasn't too crowded, we made good use of our block centre and building bucket centres, giving our hands a break from all the painting.

Other Things We Did
We couldn't get the feed from the International Space Station to sing with Chris Hadfield on Monday.  So, instead, we met up with our Reading Buddies in the music studio and everybody practiced singing the Jackman school song.

Papier Mache Cocoons
Thursday was a big day in the classroom, with three parents and two Reading Buddy volunteers helping us create our papier mache cocoons!  It was the first time most of us had used papier mache!  They've hardened well and, next week, we'll be painting them and hanging them near our caterpillar!

We went around the classroom and found fifty items to share on five pieces of paper.  Then, we doubled the paper and split the groups (which were even tens) and still have 50 items, even though they were grouped differently.

Officer John came in to talk to us about neighbourhood safety, introducing us to Elmer the Safety elephant.  We learned important things like always wear a bike helmet, don't play in between cars, look both ways before crossing the street and hold and adult's hand while doing it!

We figured out that our sunflower had grown an extra four cubes this week, making it 13 cubes tall in all!  Then we talked about the difference between how tall something is and how much it grew in a period of time.

Some of our parent volunteers led sing-songs in the class, giving us a few different versions of "Never Put a Frog in the Kitchen Sink!"

Week 32: Life Cycles and Moving Towards 50

Weekly Centres

April Portfolio

We're still working away at our portfolio drawing and writing.  Now everybody is writing as much of their words as possible with, when needed, some phonetic clues from Mr. McCullough.

Sunflower Snap Cubes

We measured our sunflower, comparing the height from last week (3 snap cubes) with the height this week (9 snap cubes).  We then had to make a prediction about how tall it would be next week, using snap cubes to represent the new height. 

Making 50

Similar to our "100 Dots" activity from the 100th day of school, we worked with a page that has been split in five section, adding ten items of our choice to each section. 

Spring Word Books

Our Spring Word Books were so big and detailed last week, we couldn't possibly get them all finished at once.  So we're finishing them this week, tracing our words, reading them with our friends, and adding pictures to each page.

Other Things We Did

We worked with the idea of 50, learning that 5 groups of 10 makes 50!  However, we also learned that 10 groups of 5 makes 50!

More "That's Not A Number!", this time with the numbers 6 and 9!

We talked about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We started with the egg, then went to the caterpillar, then proceeded to the cocoon, and ended up at butterfly.  We also played a metamorphosis game that involved switching between the different stages (though not always in order).

We talked about summer and how, even though it's really warm this week, we're not there yet.  We also used our sound-spelling strategies to creatively spell the other seaons.  We were pretty close!

We figured out if we were being good friends to our worms.  We decided we hadn't, since we hadn't fed them in a while.  So we gave them some cucumber and predicted if it would still be there by Monday.

Week 31: Celebrating Earth

Weekly Centres

Spring Books
We started making books about spring!  On each page, there was a different spring word like "flowers" or "buds" or "butterfly".  We had to write the word using the outline and then draw a picture of that spring thing!

Little Earths
Using round coffee filters, as well as blue and green food colouring, we created mini-Earths by painting the colours on.

Recycling Sort
We sorted our recyclable bins into hula hoops, choosing how we wanted to sort them.  We'll talk at the end of the week about the proper way to sort recyclables!

Frog Life Cycles
After talking about the life cycle of a frog, we created our own frog life cycles using plastecine.  We made frog eggs, tadpoles and, of course, frogs!

Other Things We Did
We celebrated Earth Day with the whole school, watching skits and songs about what we can do to help the Earth.  We then went back to the class to talk about what we saw and different things we can do.

After reading "The Lorax", we talked about why it's important to protect the environment and how, if we try to get too much from something, we can sometimes end up with nothing at all.

Our class sunflower has started to grow!  It's currently three cubes high!

We're adding to our garden by planting beans in the classroom!  Each student will be adding water to their bean every day, waiting to see how it grows!

Our favourite game show, That's Not A Number, was played again, with the number "6" being the ticket to our dance party.

Week 30: Writing About Worms

Train Station
Our drama station was turned into a train station, complete with a working train, a conductor's microphone, a ticket counter, a snack stand and a waiting area!

Plastecine Shapes
We kept working with 3D shapes this week, this time using only pieces of plastecine to create spheres, cylinders, cones, cubes and prisms!  We then matched the shapes up with a pre-made model.

Sunflowers
With paper plates, glue, crayons and goldenrod paper, we created sunflowers to put up in our window.

Worm Facts
Using non-fiction fact books, we drew pictures of worms and then wrote what we knew about worms underneath.  Everybody wrote their own words!

Writing To A Friend
Using Handwriting Without Tears style tracing sheets, we each took a paper with a classmate's name on it, wrote their name, and then drew a picture for them that we thought they'd like.  We then gave them their name and the picture!

After working with the number 5 in a whole bunch of ways, we all showed Mr. McCullough a different way to represent five then we did a few weeks ago.  We had groups of fives, drawings of five, shapes with five sides, addition statements and the actual number five!

We kept working on the idea of Fiction vs Non-Fiction so we knew what books to pick (and which ones not to pick) while we were doing our worm writing.  We did this by playing a movement game where we had to make lines behind Fiction or Non-Fiction books.

We kept adding missing letters to our daily message!  Where are those letters going?

A magician came to the school on Thursday afternoon and showed us some amazing tricks with cards, rings, paper bags and bouncing rubber balls!

Our Reading Buddies helped us out on Friday afternoon for our Community Clean-Up!  With rubber gloves and instructions in hand, we cleaned up a large area of the Jackman schoolyard!

Week 29: Numbers Stories and Respect

Sight Word Writing

Using removable Sight Words from our Sight Word Wall, we've been practising writing some of these words on grids that Mr. McCullough made for us!

3D Shape Making

With toothpicks and plasticine, we've tried to recreate a variety of 3D shapes.

Magnificent Tree, Now in 3D!!!

To help show the difference between a 2D shape and a 3D shape, we used recycled materials like boxes, paper rolls and plastic containers and bottles to create free-standing versions of our Magnificent Trees!

Spring Flower Sketching

We've tried drawing some of the flowers in our class collection, trying to make them as realistic as possible.

Number Stories with Dots

Given no more than 5 dots, we created simple number stories, like 3 bees flying to 2 flowers to pollinate them.  Some of us were able to write parts of our story all by ourselves!

Other Things We Did

On the International Day of Pink, we talked about bullying, how it's never okay to make fun of somebody for being different, and how there's pretty much no such thing as clothes or colours that are just "for boys" or "for girls". 

There was a surprise fire drills, which we all did very well at, even though it was cold outside!

With the 3D Dee Dee song in the background, we searched our room for objects that were, or were similar to, spheres, cubes, pyramids, cones and triangular and rectangular prisms.

We kept playing "That's Not a Number" and having our Number Dance Party while practising our number printing skills!

We talked about the difference between a regular story (These bees are flying to those flowers) and a number story (Three bees are flying to two flowers). 

We started leaving letters and words out of our Daily Message to see who could fill in the missing spaces.

Week 28: Magnificent Spring

Keeping with our theme of a tree for each season, we painted our spring trees this week!

Using the book "The Magnificent Tree" as a guide, we used 2D shapes to create our own "Magnificent Trees" on the carpet.  We then told our friends what features the trees had!

We kept working on our drawing in our March Portfolio, but we also working some more on adding labels.  A few of us were even able to add some simple sentences!

Other Things We Did
Janeen, a local artist, came in on Tuesday and helped us make Acrylic Hearts!  They'll be coming home at the end of next week!

We talked about how the different feelings can make us feel, and how changes in the seasons can make us feel a bit funny.

Our worms ate all the food that was left in their container and left behind castings!

We've mixed up our message a bit.  Now, we're saying it a little bit faster, but also saying it more often and in different groups (boys, girls, people wearing blue, people with short hair) to help increase our reading fluency.


We started using "Number Tickets", or sheets with different numbers on them, to practice our number printing.  If we finished it before the song playing was over, we got to participate in our number dance party!

We worked a bit on the difference between the "R" sound and the "W" sound.

Our new, favourite, in-class game show, "That's Not A Number!" took place!  We looked and numbers and letters that were similar (like 5, S & 2) and had to identify the number and, if it wasn't a number, say "That's Not A Number!"

Other Things We Did
We spent time working on our letter I and letter J.

We met our Red Wrigglers, the worms we're keeping in our class this week, and made predictions about what they would do to a box full of carrots, peppers and blueberries over the course of a week.

We started learning about the plus and equal signs and how to do some simple addition to five, using blocks, toys, and even ourselves!

We learned about what earthworms do in their life, learning terms like "burrow" and "castings". 

We figured out the difference between "Fiction" and "Non-Fiction", comparing a silly story based on worms (Diary of an Earthworm) against a fact-based book (Life of an Earthworm). 

We started doing our "Reading Club" station doing "Drop Everything And Read", where our colour groups would co-read a variety of levelled books.

Our Reading Buddies read us a book that they made, "A is for Reading Buddies", which they presented in their classroom on the third floor!  Based on "A is for Musk Ox", here are the slides they put together for our class!

We did an Egg Hunt & Hide on Friday!  Everybody had to search for eggs around the room, open them, and read the name inside, using first letters as clues to find their owner.  Once they figured out who they belonged to, they returned the egg to their owner, who then hid it again until somebody else found it and returned it!
